Love • Health • Prosperity
These mystical calcite creations are called "Fairy Stones" by Indigenous peoples living in the far north in Quebec. According to their legend, these stones, carved by nature, bring love. People offer the most beautiful ones to their beloved and friends. These stones also bring health, prosperity and luck to the owners, and keep away bad spirits.
The Fairy Stones consist of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), a mineral called Calcite. Their artistic or curious shapes are simply the creation of Mother Nature. Colonies of microorganisms are responsible of their formation. By decomposing organic matter in a clay-rich and aquatic environment, they contribute to the precipitation of calcium carbonate. At springtime, following a long period of winter numbness, colonies of microorganisms react and quickly grow in response to rising ambient water temperature. At the end of the summer, the opposite process occurs and microorganisms go back to their state of dormancy. As the years go by, colonies expand and come into contact with each other. This explains the creation of concentric rings and lines suggesting stylized figures as mother and child, face, angel, bird, rabbit, turtle, fish, Buddha, Inuit sculptures, etc.
They are found in isolated areas, in water, along the shorelines of a few lakes, near James Bay Road, Quebec and are collected by gatherers in canoes.
Due to the unique nature of each, we will intuitively pick a fairy stone for you from the size you select.
